Heartbreaking House Fire on Christmas Day Ends New Year Proposal Plans
On December 25, 2024, 37-year-old Steven Weatherford Jr. tragically lost his life in a house fire in Oakland, California.
Weatherford had been planning to propose to his girlfriend, LaShante Mayo, on New Year’s Eve. On the morning of the fire, he was awakened by smoke and flames and immediately alerted his father, aunt, and brother, helping them escape the blaze.
After ensuring their safety, he re-entered the home, possibly to retrieve the engagement ring he had purchased for Mayo. Unfortunately, he succumbed to smoke inhalation.
Family members and friends have described Weatherford as a loving and generous individual. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist with immediate financial needs and to cover the costs of his memorial service. As of December 27, the campaign had raised over $16,000.
The Oakland Fire Department has indicated that the fire was accidental. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the blaze.
This tragic incident underscores the importance of fire safety and preparedness, especially during the holiday season.
