Regulatory Measures: NAFDAC Closes Chinese Supermarket in Abuja Over Language Compliance Issues
On January 6, 2025, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) sealed a Chinese supermarket located at Azba Mall, 2 Durban Street, Wuse 2, Abuja. The closure was due to the supermarket’s sale of products labeled exclusively in Chinese, violating NAFDAC regulations that require English labeling for consumer goods.
Shaba Mohammed, NAFDAC’s Director of Investigation and Enforcement, stated that the agency received credible information about the supermarket’s non-compliance. He emphasized that selling products with foreign language labels without proper English translations is unacceptable, as it hinders consumers’ understanding of product contents and usage.
Additionally, NAFDAC discovered that some of the products were expired, further violating consumer protection standards. The agency is conducting an investigation to determine how these products entered the market and to ensure such violations do not recur.
This action underscores NAFDAC’s commitment to safeguarding public health by enforcing labeling standards and ensuring that all consumer products are safe and properly labeled.
