From Paris to Riyadh: Neymar Explains Why Saudi Pro League Tops Ligue 1
In recent statements, both Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar have expressed the opinion that the Saudi Pro League may now be more competitive than France’s Ligue 1.
At the Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai, Ronaldo remarked that, aside from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), other French clubs are “finished,” suggesting that the Saudi league offers a higher level of competition.
Neymar, who transferred from PSG to Al-Hilal in the Saudi Pro League in August 2023, echoed this sentiment. He stated that, given the influx of talent into Saudi Arabia, he “wouldn’t be surprised if the Saudi league is better than the French.”
These comments have sparked discussions about the comparative quality of the two leagues. Ligue 1 has faced criticism for being dominated by PSG, while the Saudi Pro League has recently attracted numerous high-profile players, enhancing its competitiveness.
In response to Ronaldo’s remarks, Ligue 1’s Spanish X account posted a retort featuring Lionel Messi’s World Cup celebration with Argentina, highlighting the league’s association with top talent.
Additionally, Marseille’s manager, Roberto De Zerbi, defended Ligue 1, emphasizing its strong players, coaches, and vibrant atmospheres. He suggested that the league might suffer from poor promotion compared to other top European leagues.
