N5.4m Ransom Fails to Save Farmer: Benue Community Faces Exodus
In late December 2024, gunmen abducted prominent farmer and businessman Terzungwe Shaku from Akor village in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State. The kidnappers initially demanded a ransom of ₦20 million, but the family negotiated and paid ₦5.4 million. Tragically, after the ransom was delivered, Shaku was found dead at the drop-off location.
This incident has instilled fear among residents of Akor and neighboring villages in Nzorov Council Ward, leading many to flee their homes to avoid further attacks.
The Benue State Police Command has not yet provided information about the incident.
This event is part of a broader pattern of violence in Benue State, where conflicts between herders and farmers have led to significant property losses and displacement. The state government reports that over ₦425 billion worth of property and farmlands have been destroyed, with more than two million people displaced from eight local government areas.
