On January 15, 2025, Rita Ogbolu, a 24-year-old undergraduate, was arraigned before the Evbuoriaria Magistrates’ Court in Benin City, Edo State, on charges of assaulting two police officers during a routine patrol. The incident occurred on January 10, 2025, around 2:00 p.m. on Sapele Road in Benin City.
Ogbolu is accused of unlawfully assaulting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Monday Omobude and ASP Aghahowa Anthony, while they were performing their lawful duties. She is also charged with tearing the uniform of the police team leader.
The charges against Ogbolu include conspiracy and assault, in violation of Sections 412(2), 173(b), and 313 of the Edo State Criminal Law, 2022. She pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Magistrate, Mrs. Endurance Osemwegie, granted her bail in the sum of ₦200,000 with one surety in like sum. The case has been adjourned until January 24, 2025, for hearing.
