Tinubu’s Aide Downplays Impact of Badenoch’s Remarks on Nigeria Investment
Kemi Badenoch, leader of the UK Conservative Party, has recently faced criticism for her remarks about Nigeria, her country of origin. She expressed concerns about the impact of poor governance on citizens’ lives, stating, “I don’t want Britain to be like Nigeria, a poor country where terrible government destroys lives.”
In response, Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser on Policy Communication to Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, addressed the issue, asserting that Badenoch’s comments would not affect investor confidence in Nigeria. He suggested that her rhetoric was aimed at gaining acceptance from her party’s members and emphasized that such statements are common in populist politics.
Bwala further stated, “I don’t think it would have an effect because she’s not the government in power.”
He also expressed disappointment over Badenoch’s approach, noting that unlike her predecessor, Rishi Sunak, who did not denigrate his home country, India, Badenoch’s rhetoric was detrimental.
Badenoch has stood by her comments, stating that she is not “the PR for Nigeria” and emphasizing her commitment to addressing issues within the UK.
