Confessions of a Lagos Crime Ring: Earning N250k to N300k Daily Through Phone Theft

In a recent operation, the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences Unit (Task Force) arrested two individuals involved in “one-chance” robberies, a term used to describe criminals who pose as commercial transport operators to rob unsuspecting passengers.

The suspects, Chukwudi Ezeudo and Wilfred Ukpo, were apprehended along Mile 2, Lagos, with their operational vehicle, a Volkswagen commercial bus. They confessed to daily operations across various parts of the state, including Oshodi, Obalende, Orile, Pen-Cinema, and Ojota, during which they snatched over 50 phones and other valuables daily, selling them as fairly used items at Computer Village and Ajegunle.

In another incident, a member of a “one-chance” gang, Ajibola Alao, was arrested by the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) operatives after dispossessing a victim of his phones and ₦61,000 cash. Alao admitted to being involved in “one-chance” operations since 2015, highlighting the persistent nature of such criminal activities in Lagos.
