Gun Violence Hits Academia: DELSU Professor Olisaemeka Chukwuma Killed
On Friday, January 24, 2025, Professor Emeka Chukwuma, a lecturer at Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, was tragically killed by gunmen at his residence in Umueji, Asaba, Delta State. Professor Chukwuma, 56, routinely returned to his hometown in Asaba for the weekends. Upon his arrival on Friday, he was attacked and fatally shot in his home located in the St. Bridges area of Umueji quarter.
The motive behind the assassination remains unclear. Residents of Asaba have expressed growing concerns over the increasing incidents of violence in the area, urging security agencies to intensify efforts to address the situation.
The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the incident. The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, stated that investigations are ongoing to apprehend those responsible for the professor’s death.
Professor Chukwuma was a respected academic at DELSU, Abraka. He initially lectured at the Anwai campus before returning to the main campus following administrative changes. His untimely death is a significant loss to the academic community and has left many in mourning.
