Victory for Activists: Kano Withdraws Criminal Charges Against Protesters

The Kano State Government has officially withdrawn all criminal charges against individuals involved in the #EndBadGovernance protests. This decision was announced by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Haruna Dederi, who acted through the Director of Public Prosecution.

The withdrawal follows a petition submitted by the civil society organization Citizens’ Gavel on November 5, 2024, urging the dismissal of charges against peaceful protesters arrested between August 1 and August 10, 2024.

The protesters had faced allegations including conspiracy to commit treason, unlawful assembly, and public disturbance. The withdrawal of these charges is seen as a significant victory for justice and a reaffirmation of citizens’ rights to peacefully express their grievances without fear of persecution.

Citizens’ Gavel commended the Attorney General for upholding the rule of law and respecting constitutional freedoms.
