Fake Beverage Alert: Hennessy and Coca Cola Factories Shut by NAFDAC
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has conducted a significant operation in Aba, Abia State, resulting in the closure of approximately 250 makeshift factories producing counterfeit beverages and food products. This action, part of “Operation Clean Up Aba,” led to the seizure and destruction of fake items valued at over ₦5 billion.
NAFDAC’s Director-General, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, highlighted that these clandestine factories were manufacturing counterfeit versions of popular brands, including Hennessy, Seaman Schnapps, Coca-Cola, Sprite, Peak Milk, and Hollandia Yoghurt. The production processes involved the use of harmful chemicals, contaminated water, and recycled bottles, posing significant health risks to consumers.
The Cemetery Market in Aba has been notorious for its role in the production of fake alcoholic drinks, carbonated beverages, and food products. This recent crackdown marks the second major operation in two years aimed at curbing the circulation of counterfeit goods from this area.
Professor Adeyeye commended the support from the Abia State Government, particularly Governor Alex Otti, the Mayor of Aba South, and the interim market management committee, which was instrumental in the success of the operation. She urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and report any suspicious products to the nearest NAFDAC office to ensure public health and safety.
