Fuel Frenzy in Oyo: Understanding the Residents’ Agitation Over Firefighters’ Actions
On January 28, 2025, a petrol tanker carrying 33,000 liters of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) suffered a tire burst at Sabo Market, Orile Igbon, along the Ogbomoso-Ilorin expressway in Oyo State.
The incident led to a significant fuel spill. Firefighters from the Oyo State Fire Service responded promptly to the scene to prevent potential hazards. However, some residents attempted to scoop the spilled fuel, and when the firefighters intervened to stop this dangerous activity, they were met with hostility.
The residents attacked the firefighters with stones, causing severe damage to their fire truck, including a shattered windscreen. The situation forced the firefighters to seek refuge at Owode Police Station.
Subsequently, the Kwara State Fire Service was called in to assist. Their swift and coordinated response prevented a major fire disaster. They managed to safely siphon over 10,000 liters of PMS into another tanker, minimizing potential hazards. No lives were lost, and no injuries were reported in the incident.
The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service condemned the attacks on firefighters and urged the public to desist from obstructing emergency responders. He emphasized that individuals found guilty of assaulting fire service personnel would face the full weight of the law.
