Heroic Rescue: Construction Workers Saved from Anambra Building Collapse
On January 29, 2025, a three-storey building under construction collapsed near Diamond Pizza, opposite Five Star Eatery, along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway in Awka, Anambra State. The incident occurred around 5:25 PM.
Two construction workers were rescued from the debris and have been hospitalized. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported, and the victims are responding to treatment.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing a series of thunderous sounds before the building collapsed completely. Rescue operations commenced immediately, with passersby and commuters assisting in pulling out the injured.
The Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) has visited the site and constituted a panel of inquiry to determine the cause of the collapse. Further details will be communicated to the public as the investigation unfolds.
In response to the incident, Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo has warned builders against the use of substandard materials and emphasized the importance of adhering to building regulations to prevent such occurrences in the future.
The Nigeria Institute of Building (NIoB) has also called on the Anambra State Government to release and implement the white paper of the panel of inquiry to address the issue of building collapses in the state.
