Teacher Assault Case: Five Accused Stand Arraigned in Ogun
On Thursday, January 30, 2025, five individuals were arraigned before a Magistrates’ Court in Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, for allegedly assaulting a secondary school teacher, Mr. Akeem Soyingbe. The defendants—Sunday Matthew (19), Salisu Sulaiman (32), Ojenugba Philips (34), Sunday Abu (45), and Joel Sunday (20)—face a six-count charge that includes conspiracy and assault. They have pleaded not guilty to all charges.
According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on January 29 at Mamu Community Comprehensive High School in Ago-Iwoye.
The defendants allegedly entered the school premises and assaulted Mr. Soyingbe, accusing him of being responsible for Matthew’s poor academic performance. The assault has reportedly instilled fear among students, leading to decreased attendance.
Magistrate O.F. Adeduntan granted each defendant bail in the sum of ₦500,000, with two sureties in like amount. The sureties are required to provide evidence of two years of tax payments to the Ogun State government. The case has been adjourned until February 27 for further hearing.
