Child Support System Under Scrutiny After Nigerian Doctor’s Suicide in the US
Dr. Ikenna Erinne, a 36-year-old Nigerian cardiologist based in the United States, reportedly died by suicide on January 26, 2025, following a prolonged and contentious divorce and child custody battle. A U.S. court had ruled in favor of his ex-wife, ordering him to pay $15,000 monthly in child support. The financial strain from legal fees and the court’s decision allegedly contributed to his tragic death.
Dr. Erinne, originally from Anambra State, Nigeria, was an alumnus of the Nigerian Navy Secondary School in Port Harcourt. His funeral is scheduled for Monday, February 3, 2025, in Maryland, USA.
This incident has sparked discussions about the challenges African men face within the U.S. legal system, especially concerning divorce and child custody matters. Nigerian-American commentator Clayton Udo highlighted the systemic issues that disproportionately affect African men, emphasizing the need for change.
