NLC Decision: Protest Over Telecom Tariff Postponed
As of now, there is no available information indicating that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has suspended its proposed protest against the recent 50% increase in telecommunication tariffs. The NLC has expressed strong opposition to the tariff hike, describing it as an unjust burden on citizens already facing economic challenges. They have called on Nigerians to prepare for a nationwide boycott of telecommunication services to compel a reversal of the increase.
In contrast, the National Association of Telecommunication Subscribers (NATCOMS) has distanced itself from the NLC’s planned protest. NATCOMS advocates for negotiation and legal measures as appropriate responses to the tariff hike, warning that industrial action could send negative signals to investors.
Telecommunication companies have maintained that the tariff hike is essential for the long-term sustainability of the sector and the improvement of services for subscribers. The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has urged these companies to prioritize service improvements following the tariff increase.
