E-Hailing Fare Discontent: Lagos Drivers’ Boycott Threat
E-hailing drivers in Lagos have threatened to embark on a boycott over what they describe as “low fares” from ride-hailing platforms, despite the rising cost of living. The drivers, who operate on platforms like Bolt and Uber, argue that current fare rates are unsustainable given the skyrocketing prices of fuel, vehicle maintenance, and daily expenses.
During a recent meeting of their unions and associations, the drivers expressed frustration at the platforms’ failure to adjust fares to reflect the economic reality since the fuel subsidy removal. They claim that after deducting commissions paid to the platforms, they are left with minimal earnings, making it nearly impossible to cover their costs or support their families.
One driver stated, “How do you expect us to survive when the fares don’t even cover the cost of fuel, let alone maintenance and other expenses?”
The drivers are demanding an urgent review of fare structures, a reduction in platform commissions, and better welfare packages. If their demands are not met, they have threatened to embark on a mass boycott, which could paralyze the e-hailing industry in Lagos.
