Keke Driver’s Year in Prison Over Slippers Incident
A Nigerian tricycle operator, commonly known as a “keke” driver, named Wisdom Elijah, recently shared his harrowing experience of spending nearly a year in prison over a misunderstanding involving a pair of slippers.
In a video circulating on social media, Wisdom recounted that on January 6, 2024, after concluding his day’s work, a friend invited him to a birthday party. On their way back, his tricycle ran out of fuel, prompting them to purchase some from a local vendor.
Unbeknownst to Wisdom, his friend’s slippers had broken, leading the friend to take a pair of slippers from the vendor’s premises without permission. The vendor noticed the missing footwear and accused both men of theft, resulting in their arrest.
Despite spending three days in police custody and believing it to be a minor issue, they were subsequently sentenced to prison, where Wisdom remained until his release just a few weeks ago.
