Grammar Corrections in Political Jokes: Sani vs El-Rufai
Senator Shehu Sani and former Kaduna State First Lady Hadiza El-Rufai recently engaged in a light-hearted exchange on X (formerly Twitter), which has drawn attention from Nigerians.
The incident began when Sani posted a humorous comment about President Bola Tinubu’s frequent international travels, joking that whenever the president travels abroad, taxes and prices increase.
His exact phrasing, “Taxes and prices goes up,” contained a grammatical error.
Hadiza El-Rufai, known for correcting grammar on social media, pointed out that it should be “go up” instead of “goes up.
” Sani responded playfully, calling her “mummy” and asking her to “leave him alone,” referencing their mutual unfollowing on the platform, but noting that she still engages with his posts.
The exchange sparked various reactions online, with some people supporting Hadiza’s correction, while others criticized the focus on grammar in the midst of more serious national issues.
