Stricter Traffic Laws in Lagos: Fines Announced
The Lagos State Government has announced the implementation of fines for traffic violations, specifically targeting red light infractions and speeding. Motorists caught running a red light will face a fine of ₦20,000, while those exceeding designated speed limits will be fined ₦50,000.
To enforce these regulations, the government has expanded its Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), deploying high-tech cameras at strategic locations to monitor and capture traffic violations. The initiative aims to promote responsible driving habits, reduce road accidents, and enhance overall safety.
Specific speed limits have been established for certain routes:
- Alapere-Ogudu Road: 80 kilometers per hour
- Nitel, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, Allen Avenue Road Junction, and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road: 60 kilometers per hour
Motorists are advised to adhere to these speed limits to avoid penalties.
The government emphasizes that this system is not intended to be punitive but to encourage responsible driving habits, ultimately reducing road accidents and improving safety.
