El-Rufai’s Stance: No Rewards for Backing Tinubu
Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has clarified that his support for President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 election was driven by altruism, with no expectation of personal gain. El-Rufai emphasized that his actions were motivated by a commitment to God, country, and the All Progressives Congress (APC). He stated, “We did what we did for God, Country and Party, expecting nothing in return.”
This clarification comes amid recent tensions between El-Rufai and certain members of the Tinubu administration. The former governor has been vocal in his critiques of the APC, asserting that the party has deviated from its foundational principles. In response, some presidential aides have questioned whether El-Rufai’s criticisms would persist had he been appointed to a position within the current administration.
El-Rufai’s remarks were in response to discussions on social media, where users highlighted his significant role in supporting Tinubu’s candidacy. He reiterated that his support was based on principle and that he has since moved on, suggesting that any discomfort lies with those questioning his motives. He remarked, “We have got over it and moved on, but their conscience won’t let them sleep well.”
