Botswana Launches Monthly Allowance for Newborns

New Initiative: Monthly Support for Botswana’s Infants

Botswana’s Vice President and Minister of Finance, Ndaba N. Gaolathe, has proposed a monthly allowance of 300 Pula (approximately $22) for newborn babies until they reach one year of age. This initiative aims to support parents in covering early childcare expenses.

In addition to the newborn allowance, the government plans to provide free sanitary pads to female students, promoting dignity and addressing essential needs. The Old Age Pension, known as the Tandabala Allowance, is also set to increase from 830 Pula to 1,400 Pula effective April 1, 2025.
