FG Faces Pressure from Reps on Telecom Tariff Increase
On February 11, 2025, the House of Representatives urged the Federal Government to suspend the proposed increase in telecommunications tariffs until service quality improves. This resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Hon. Oforji Oboku, representing Yenagoa/Opokuma federal constituency of Bayelsa State.
Hon. Oboku highlighted that while telecommunications companies have advocated for a tariff hike, citing increased operational costs and the need for better infrastructure, consumers are already grappling with economic hardships and subpar network services. He emphasized that any tariff increase without prior improvement in service delivery would exacerbate financial struggles for the average Nigerian and widen existing inequalities.
The House’s resolution calls on the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to halt the impending tariff hike until tangible improvements in service quality are observed.
