Fire Incident at INEC Office: 558 Ballot Boxes Lost

A fire incident at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Sokoto State has resulted in the destruction of 558 ballot boxes and other election materials. The blaze, which occurred on February 14, 2025, also damaged 320 voting cubicles, 20 megaphones, 1,200 ballot box bags, and 8 electric power generators.

INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, confirmed the incident in a statement. He noted that the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Sokoto State, Dr. Nura Ali, reported the fire, which was detected by the security guard on duty. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Despite the loss, INEC has assured the public that the incident will not affect the upcoming general elections, as arrangements are being made to replace the damaged materials.
