Miss Nigeria's Mother Detained for Residency Fraud

South Africa Arrests Chidimma Adeshina’s Mother

Anabela Rungo, the mother of Miss Universe Nigeria 2024, Chidimma Adetshina, was arrested in Cape Town, South Africa, on Saturday, February 15, 2025, over allegations of fraudulent residency. South African authorities accuse Rungo, a Mozambican national, of illegally obtaining South African identity documents.

Her documentation was revoked in September 2024 after officials uncovered irregularities in her residency status. Despite being declared an “undesirable person,” Rungo reportedly continued to reside in Cape Town using her Mozambican passport. Investigations into potential misrepresentation and fraudulent activities are ongoing.

This development follows a previous controversy involving her daughter, Chidimma Adetshina, who withdrew from the Miss South Africa 2024 pageant due to questions about her citizenship and her mother’s alleged identity fraud. Adetshina later represented Nigeria in the Miss Universe 2024 pageant, finishing as the first runner-up.
