Breaking News: Conflict Erupts Between Lagos Lawmakers and DSS Officers
On February 17, 2025, a significant confrontation occurred at the Lagos State House of Assembly involving lawmakers, legislative staff, and operatives from the Department of State Services (DSS). The incident stemmed from a leadership dispute within the Assembly, particularly following the controversial removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa on January 13, 2025. This action has been described by some as a “coup,” leading to heightened tensions among Assembly members.
In response to the escalating situation, DSS operatives, accompanied by Nigeria Police personnel, arrived at the Assembly complex in the early hours of the morning. They proceeded to seal the offices of the current Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, her deputy, and the Clerk of the House. By 10 a.m., armed security personnel had established control over the premises in Alausa, Ikeja, conducting thorough checks on all individuals entering or leaving the complex.
The presence of DSS operatives led to a heated confrontation with lawmakers and Assembly staff. Videos captured during the incident show DSS officials, dressed in black jackets and helmets and armed with weapons, engaging in physical struggles with legislative workers at the entrance of the chamber. Despite the DSS’s attempts to halt proceedings, the legislative staff and lawmakers resisted, leading to a chaotic scene within the Assembly premises.
Speaker Mojisola Meranda arrived at the complex around 11:15 a.m. and, despite the tension, managed to preside over a plenary session. The session commenced after legislative staff and members successfully resisted the DSS’s efforts to disrupt proceedings. The exact reasons behind the DSS’s intervention remain unclear, but it is believed to be connected to the ongoing leadership tussle within the Assembly.
This incident has raised concerns about the autonomy of legislative institutions and the role of security agencies in internal political matters. Lawmakers have described the DSS’s actions as a “national embarrassment,” emphasizing the need for respect for democratic processes and institutions.
