Trader Receives Caning for Assaulting Friend Over Debt
On February 19, 2025, a Magistrates’ Court in Kaduna sentenced 34-year-old trader Jibrin Yusuf to 10 strokes of the cane after he pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy and assault against his friend, Abubakar Haruna, over an unpaid ₦3,000 debt. In addition to the corporal punishment, Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel ordered Yusuf to pay Haruna ₦230,000 in restitution for damages and theft.
The incident escalated when Yusuf, unable to recover the debt, enlisted four accomplices to forcibly enter Haruna’s residence, assault him, destroy property worth ₦50,000, and steal a phone valued at ₦180,000. The prosecutor, Inspector Chidi Leo, stated that these actions violated provisions of the Kaduna State Penal Code, 2017.
