Local Government Election: Osun APC Pulls Out
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State has announced its withdrawal from the local government elections scheduled for Saturday, February 22, 2025. This decision follows a Court of Appeal judgment on February 10, which reinstated previously elected APC chairmen and councillors, rendering the upcoming elections unnecessary.
In a letter dated February 17, APC State Publicity Secretary Alao Kamorudeen informed the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) of the party’s withdrawal, stating that the court’s decision means the local government seats are no longer vacant.
The reinstatement of the APC officials has led to tensions between the APC and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state. Clashes over control of local government secretariats resulted in violence on Monday, February 17, with reports indicating that six individuals lost their lives and several others were injured.
In response to the escalating situation, APC chieftain Olatunbosun Oyintiloye has called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene and urge Governor Ademola Adeleke to halt the planned elections to prevent further crisis. Oyintiloye emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and suggested that the state government should respect the rule of law and avoid actions that could lead to bloodshed.
The Osun State government, however, has dismissed the APC’s stance, asserting that the planned elections are legitimate and criticizing the APC’s candidates as “illegal.”
