New Regulations: Fuel Tankers Restricted by FG

Road Safety: FG Prohibits 60,000-Litre Tankers

The Nigerian government has announced a ban on fuel tankers with capacities exceeding 60,000 litres from operating on the nation’s roads, effective March 1, 2025. This decision, implemented by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), aims to reduce the frequency of road accidents involving heavy-duty petroleum tankers.

NMDPRA Executive Director Ogbugo Ukoha stated that from March 1, trucks with capacities over 60,000 litres will not be permitted to load at any petroleum product loading depot. Furthermore, by the fourth quarter of 2025, the ban will extend to tankers exceeding 45,000 litres in capacity. This phased approach is part of a broader strategy to enhance road safety and mitigate the high incidence of tanker-related accidents in Nigeria.

The decision follows deliberations among key stakeholders, including the Department of State Services (DSS), Federal Fire Service, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), and the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN). These discussions culminated in a consensus to enforce stricter regulations on tanker capacities to ensure safer transportation of petroleum products across the country.
