Deputy Speaker Kalu on State Creation and Constitutional Law

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has disclosed that none of the 31 submitted requests for state creation have met the constitutional requirements. Speaking at a two-day retreat in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, Kalu emphasized the need for strict adherence to constitutional provisions in such proposals. Consequently, the submission deadline has been extended to March 5, 2025, to allow proponents to fulfill the necessary criteria.

Kalu highlighted that the House Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution is currently evaluating over 250 amendment proposals, covering areas such as federal structure, power devolution, local government autonomy, fiscal federation, judicial reforms, and electoral reforms. He stressed the importance of a proactive and cooperative approach to ensure seamless legislative processes and comprehensive legal reforms.

The Deputy Speaker also announced plans to establish a situation room in collaboration with the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC). This initiative aims to monitor public engagements and address concerns related to the constitutional amendment process, ensuring transparency and inclusivity.
