Relocation of 29 Prisons: A New Era in Correctional Policy

Urban Prisons to Move: Tinubu’s Strategic Approval

President Bola Tinubu has authorized the relocation of 29 correctional centers from urban areas across Nigeria. This decision, announced by Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo on Friday, February 21, 2025, aims to modernize the correctional system and address security concerns associated with the current urban locations of these facilities.

The move is part of broader efforts to reform the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS). During the announcement, Minister Tunji-Ojo also unveiled 39 newly acquired operational vehicles and five bullet-resistant guard booths for the NCoS, emphasizing the government’s commitment to enhancing the security and efficiency of correctional facilities nationwide.

The relocation initiative is expected to mitigate potential security risks posed by the proximity of correctional centers to densely populated urban areas. By situating these facilities in more suitable locations, the government aims to improve operational effectiveness and ensure the safety of both the public and correctional personnel.
