New Bat Coronavirus Discovered by Chinese Researchers

Chinese Study Reveals Bat Virus Similar to Covid-19

Chinese researchers, led by virologist Shi Zhengli, have identified a new bat-derived coronavirus named HKU5-CoV-2. This virus has the potential to infect humans by binding to the ACE2 receptor, the same pathway utilized by SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19.

The discovery has raised concerns about possible zoonotic transmission, though the efficiency of HKU5-CoV-2’s binding to human ACE2 receptors appears to be lower than that of SARS-CoV-2. While the immediate risk of a pandemic is considered low, scientists emphasize the importance of ongoing surveillance and research to monitor such viruses and mitigate potential spillover events.
