IGP Responds to Criticism: Focus on Fake News Arrests
Police Public Relations Officer Muyiwa Adejobi has stated that the Nigeria Police Force has not arrested individuals for criticizing the government, the Inspector General of Police, or the police institution. Instead, arrests have been made solely for disseminating false information and fake news.
Adejobi emphasized the police’s zero tolerance for actions that spread falsehoods, malign individuals’ characters, or incite public disorder. He warned against the misuse of social media platforms to propagate fake news, noting that such acts are criminal and punishable under the law.
This clarification comes in the context of recent arrests, including that of a man in Edo State for allegedly operating multiple social media accounts to disseminate false and inciting content aimed at provoking the public against the police.
