Reinstated Chairmen Demand LG Workers’ Return to Duty
In Osun State, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has directed reinstated local government chairmen and councillors to resume their duties immediately, following a Court of Appeal judgment on February 10, 2025, which nullified their previous removal. The APC has issued a 72-hour ultimatum to local government workers, mandating them to return to work by Wednesday, February 27, 2025, or face termination of employment.
Jamiu Olawumi, an APC chieftain, confirmed that all chairmen and councillors have resumed duties across the state’s local government offices, including Irewole Local Government. He emphasized that security measures are in place, with police, Department of State Services (DSS), and Civil Defence personnel ensuring order.
This directive comes amidst ongoing tensions between the APC and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State. Governor Ademola Adeleke of the PDP had previously instructed newly elected local government officials not to assume office yet, leading to conflicting orders within the state’s local government administration.
The PDP has cautioned the sacked local government chairmen and councillors against attempting to forcefully return to office, citing the Appeal Court’s judgment that nullified their previous appointments. The party warns that any attempt to resume duties without proper authorization could lead to legal consequences.
In response to the escalating situation, the Inspector General of Police has deployed tactical squads to local government secretariats across Osun State to maintain peace and prevent potential clashes. These deployments are expected to remain in place for the next two months to ensure stability during this period of administrative transition.
Local government workers are now faced with conflicting directives from the APC and PDP leaderships, creating uncertainty regarding their roles and responsibilities.
