Ukraine Marks War Anniversary with 28 New Security Pacts

Zelenskyy Announces 28 Security Agreements on War Anniversary

On February 24, 2025, marking the third anniversary of the ongoing conflict, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the signing of 28 security agreements with international partners.

These agreements encompass defense, financial, and political cooperation, aiming to prevent the expansion of the Ukrainian crisis and to establish a robust security framework in Europe. President Zelensky emphasized the necessity of developing Ukraine’s air defense capabilities, proposing the creation of a “new European air shield.”

The event in Kyiv was attended by several foreign leaders, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President Antonio Costa, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

These bilateral agreements are part of a broader initiative that began with the G7 Joint Declaration of Support for Ukraine at the 2023 Vilnius Summit. As of February 2025, 29 NATO allies and partners have signed such agreements, providing Ukraine with enduring security commitments.

In a related development, Ukraine and the United States are negotiating continued military aid in exchange for access to Ukraine’s mineral resources. While Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Olga Stefanishyna indicated that nearly all key details have been finalized, President Zelensky has expressed concerns about the terms, suggesting they could adversely affect future generations of Ukrainians.
