Poisonous Fish Consumption Claims Four Lives in Taraba
On February 22, 2025, six Fulani herders in Kashimbila, Takum Local Government Area of Taraba State, embarked on a fishing expedition. Unaware of the danger, they caught and consumed a poisonous species of fish. By the following day, four of them—Abdul Juli, Sule Abubakar, Adamu Mato, and Saidu Payo—had succumbed to the poisoning, while the remaining two, Yusuf Musa and Ibrahim Haruna, were hospitalized and are currently receiving treatment.
The incident was reported to local authorities by Haruna Isiaka of Chidawa Village. In response, security operatives have deposited the deceased individuals’ bodies at the hospital mortuary for autopsy, and investigations into the cause of the poisoning are ongoing.
This tragic event underscores the dangers associated with consuming certain fish species, such as the pufferfish, known locally as “fugu.” Experts have previously warned about the presence of this highly toxic fish in Nigerian waters, including regions like Taraba State. The pufferfish contains tetrodotoxin, a potent neurotoxin that can cause severe illness or death if ingested.
