Human Trafficking Conviction of Chinese Nationals in South Africa
Seven Chinese nationals have been convicted in the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg on multiple charges, including human trafficking, child labor, and labor law violations. The individuals—Kevin Tsao Shu-Uei, Chen Hui, Qin Li, Jiaqing Zhou, Ma Biao, Dai Junying, and Zhang Zhilian—were found guilty on 158 out of 160 charges.
These charges stem from their operation of a factory, Beautiful City Pty Ltd, located in Village Deep, Johannesburg. The factory employed 91 Malawian nationals, 37 of whom were minors, under deplorable conditions. The workers were subjected to forced labor, worked seven days a week, and received wages below the national minimum wage.
The court also noted that the factory failed to register with the Compensation Fund and the Unemployment Insurance Fund, neglected to report workplace incidents, and did not maintain a safe working environment. The sentencing is scheduled to be handed down soon.
