Strategies to Boost Your Income Amid Economic Hardship

Bayo Onanuga’s Advice on Enhancing Your Financial Stability

In response to the economic challenges faced by Nigerians, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has urged citizens to engage in subsistence farming to combat rising food costs. Drawing parallels to past initiatives like the 1976 ‘Operation Feed the Nation’ under former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Onanuga emphasized the importance of individual efforts alongside government actions to alleviate food scarcity.

To further address economic hardships, the federal government has introduced intervention programs aimed at providing direct financial support to vulnerable populations. One such initiative plans to distribute ₦75,000 over three months (₦25,000 monthly) to 15 million households, effectively reaching approximately 75 million individuals. Additionally, artisans, traders, women, and youth are set to receive grants of ₦50,000 to establish small-scale businesses, with at least 1,000 beneficiaries in each of the 774 local government areas.

These measures are part of the National Social Investment Program (NSIP), a social welfare initiative launched in 2015 to promote equitable resource distribution to vulnerable groups, including children, youth, and women. The NSIP encompasses various programs such as N-Power, which offers job training and education to young Nigerians, and the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Program (GEEP), a micro-lending scheme targeting entrepreneurs, particularly women and youth.

While acknowledging the global nature of the current economic challenges, Onanuga expressed optimism that Nigerians would begin to see the positive impacts of these government efforts within the next 12 months.
