Emergency Landing of FedEx Flight 3609 Captured on Video

On March 1, 2025, FedEx Flight 3609, a Boeing 767 cargo plane, experienced a bird strike shortly after departing from Newark Liberty International Airport en route to Indianapolis. This incident led to an engine fire, prompting the crew to declare an emergency and return to Newark. The aircraft landed safely at 8:07 a.m., approximately nine minutes after takeoff, with no injuries reported among the three crew members on board.

Videos captured by witnesses show flames emanating from the aircraft’s right engine during its ascent and subsequent landing. The quick response of the pilots and first responders was commended, ensuring the safety of all personnel involved.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have initiated investigations into the incident. Bird strikes are relatively common, with over 19,000 reported in 2023—a 14% increase from 2022—but only about 5% result in significant damage.

Air traffic at Newark Liberty International Airport was briefly halted following the emergency but resumed shortly thereafter. FedEx has acknowledged the incident, praising the professionalism and swift actions of their crew and first responders.
