Jandor Reflects on the Peter Obi Effect

The Impact of Peter Obi on Jandor’s Campaign

Abdul-Azeez Adediran, commonly known as Jandor, the 2023 governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State, has attributed his electoral defeat to the influence of Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate. In a recent interview, Jandor remarked that his campaign had significant momentum until the “Obi effect” altered the political landscape.

Jandor observed that prior to the presidential election, the governorship race in Lagos was predominantly a contest between the PDP and the All Progressives Congress (APC). However, Peter Obi’s victory in Lagos during the presidential poll shifted voter dynamics, leading to increased support for the Labour Party in the subsequent governorship election.

Reflecting on the unexpected political shift, Jandor stated, “We did everything, but that wave came and swallowed the whole thing; nobody saw that coming.” He expressed confidence that, if not for this unforeseen development, he might have emerged victorious in the governorship election.

In the 2023 Lagos State governorship election, incumbent Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the APC secured 762,134 votes, while Labour Party’s Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour received 312,329 votes, and Jandor garnered 62,449 votes.
