Arrest of Nigerian National for Drug Trafficking in South Africa

South African authorities have arrested a 55-year-old Nigerian national at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg for alleged drug trafficking. The suspect had arrived from São Paulo, Brazil, and was intercepted by the South African Police Service (SAPS) upon landing. A medical X-ray revealed that he had ingested multiple pellets suspected to contain cocaine. The estimated street value of the drugs is approximately R7.5 million.

The suspect is currently under medical supervision as he expels the ingested pellets and is expected to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court soon.

This arrest is part of a series of recent interceptions at OR Tambo International Airport. In the past two months, authorities have apprehended at least ten individuals attempting to smuggle drugs into the country. Notably, a 30-year-old Namibian woman was arrested after an X-ray revealed she had swallowed 68 pellets, suspected to contain cocaine, weighing approximately 850 grams.
