Senator Akpabio Denies Claims by Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan

Akpabio Addresses Harassment Allegations from Senator Akpoti

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has publicly denied allegations of sexual harassment leveled against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. During a Senate plenary session on March 5, 2025, Akpabio addressed the chamber, stating, “At no time did I ever harass any woman.” He emphasized his upbringing by a single mother and his respect for women, noting that he had been recognized as the “most gender-friendly governor in Nigeria” during his tenure as a state governor.

The allegations surfaced when Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan submitted a formal petition to the Senate, accusing Akpabio of sexual harassment and abuse of office. She invoked Order 40 of the Senate Rules to present her petition, which led to a contentious debate among senators. Some lawmakers argued that the matter was sub judice due to ongoing legal proceedings involving Akpoti-Uduaghan and Akpabio’s wife, suggesting that the Senate should refrain from discussing the issue.

In response to the petition, Akpabio reiterated his innocence, stating, “I did not harass Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan sexually, and I have never harassed any woman sexually.” He highlighted his respect for women, attributing it to his upbringing by a single mother and his role as a father to four daughters.

The Senate has yet to decide on the appropriate course of action regarding the petition, as discussions continue on how to address the allegations within the legislative framework.
