Violence Erupts in Rivers: Fubara Supporters Targeted
On March 5, 2025, gunmen opened fire on a group of youths supporting Governor Siminalayi Fubara in Elele, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State. The youths had gathered peacefully at a roundabout to express their solidarity when the assailants struck, resulting in injuries to four individuals.
An eyewitness identified as Nwokoro alleged that a senior local vigilante commander, known as ‘Fucking Naira,’ led the attack. The assailant reportedly emerged suddenly and fired on the supporters.
Superintendent Grace Iringe-Koko, spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, confirmed the incident. She stated that the violence erupted when police officers attempted to disperse the gathering, deemed an unlawful assembly. An unidentified assailant hiding nearby then opened fire, injuring four individuals.
This incident occurs amid heightened political tensions in Rivers State, following a 48-hour ultimatum issued by the Martin Amaewhule-led State Assembly to Governor Fubara. The assembly demanded the re-presentation of the 2025 Appropriation Bill for approval, with the deadline expiring on March 5.
Governor Fubara has vowed to investigate and expose those responsible for attacks on council secretariats, ensuring accountability. His administration is collaborating with the Nigeria Police and Department of State Services to uncover the masterminds behind these incidents
