South Korean Jets Accidentally Strike Civilian Homes

Civilian Casualties from South Korean Airstrike Incident

On Thursday, during joint military exercises near the North Korean border, South Korean fighter jets accidentally dropped eight 500-pound bombs on the civilian village of Nogok in Pocheon, approximately 25 miles north of Seoul.

The mishap resulted in 15 injuries, including two serious cases, and caused significant damage to homes, a church, and a greenhouse.

The incident occurred when pilots mistakenly input incorrect target coordinates during training exercises with U.S. forces. Residents described scenes reminiscent of a battlefield, with explosions causing widespread panic.

In response, South Korea’s Air Force expressed deep regret over the accident, attributing it to pilot error, and announced the temporary suspension of live-fire drills pending a thorough investigation. However, major joint exercises with the U.S., such as “Freedom Shield,” are scheduled to proceed as planned.
