Police Detain Anti-Cult Activist Following Tragic Death

A 19-year-old auxiliary nurse, Isioma Nwayalani, tragically lost her life due to a stray bullet allegedly fired by an operative of the Delta State Anti-Cult Volunteer Corps in Okpanam Community, near Asaba. The incident occurred on Saturday evening, March 8, 2025, when the operative and his colleagues were reportedly returning from a burial ceremony in Agbor and began shooting sporadically to herald their return.

Witnesses stated that Nwayalani, who worked in a patent medicine store located on the ground floor of the building housing the anti-cult office, was struck in the hand and stomach while attempting to seek safety. She was immediately rushed to the Delta State Specialist Hospital in Okpanam but was pronounced dead around 7:30 p.m.

The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of the involved operative. The command’s spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, stated that the suspect is currently in custody, and an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Edafe assured that updates would be provided upon the conclusion of the investigation.

Family members of the deceased have expressed profound grief and are calling for justice. Christopher Nwayalani, a relative, described the incident as tragic and avoidable, noting that Isioma typically did not work on Saturdays but had visited her colleague after an unsuccessful attempt to visit a nearby salon.
