Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan's Beauty: A Double-Edged Sword

Senator Ogunlewe on Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Striking Appearance

Former Nigerian Minister of Works, Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe, recently commented on Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s physical appearance, suggesting that her beauty presents challenges in her political career. During an interview on Arise News, Ogunlewe stated, “But the beauty of Distinguished Senator Natasha is a problem to her.” He elaborated that men’s attitudes might change when a “pretty” woman passes by, implying that her attractiveness influences how male colleagues interact with her.

These remarks have sparked discussions about the role of gender and appearance in Nigerian politics, especially considering Akpoti-Uduaghan’s recent six-month suspension from the Senate. The suspension followed her allegations of sexual assault against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, which were dismissed by the Senate’s ethics committee.

Ogunlewe’s perspective raises questions about the challenges female politicians face regarding perceptions of their appearance and the potential biases that may arise from such perceptions.
