Charley Boy on Nigeria’s Leadership Crisis
Veteran Nigerian entertainer and activist, Charly Boy (Charles Oputa), has expressed strong opinions regarding the ongoing controversy between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. Akpoti-Uduaghan has accused Akpabio of sexual harassment, a claim that has led to significant public discourse.
In a recent Instagram post, Charly Boy criticized the current state of Nigeria’s leadership, stating:
“From the Presidency, the Supreme Court justices, the Law enforcement agencies to the house of rep members and Horny Senators, my people, Nigeria don scarter scarter. Reminds me of my song ‘1990’.”
He further condemned the National Assembly, labeling its members as “randy dogs, deplorable and undistinguished.” Charly Boy emphasized that “real criminals are in power” in Nigeria, referring to them as a “congregation of crooks, drug peddlers and sex predators.”
The controversy escalated when Akpoti-Uduaghan reported Akpabio to the United Nations over the alleged harassment. In response, a group of women organized a protest supporting Akpabio, which Charly Boy criticized. He expressed disappointment over such demonstrations, arguing that they perpetuate a culture that silences victims and shields perpetrators.
This situation has sparked widespread debate on societal norms, with public figures like actress Kate Henshaw and musician Seun Kuti advocating for stronger support systems for victims and challenging structures that limit women’s voices in governance and leadership roles.
