Natasha Akpoti Files Contempt Charge Against Akpabio

Akpoti Takes Legal Action: Contempt Charge Filed

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central has filed a contempt charge against Senate President Godswill Akpabio and other Senate leaders following her recent suspension from the Senate. The Senate’s ethics committee suspended Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months, citing alleged disciplinary violations such as refusal to sit in her assigned seat, speaking without recognition, and making abusive remarks about Senate leadership. This suspension, announced on March 6, 2025, does not pertain to her earlier accusation of sexual assault against Akpabio, which was dismissed due to procedural issues.

In response to her suspension, Akpoti-Uduaghan has filed a lawsuit against Akpabio, seeking 100 billion naira in damages. She has also accused the ethics committee of bias and unfair treatment. Critics argue that the committee’s actions lack impartiality, given Akpabio’s significant influence over its composition.

Akpabio, who has previously faced corruption allegations during his tenure as Governor of Akwa Ibom State, has denied all accusations made by Akpoti-Uduaghan. He maintains that the recent suspension is unrelated to her sexual assault claim and is instead due to her alleged misconduct within the Senate.

This legal action highlights ongoing tensions within the Nigerian Senate and raises concerns about gender representation and accountability in Nigerian politics.
