Nigeria Faces US Sanctions Over Christian Violence
The United States House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa has authorized President Donald Trump to impose sanctions on Nigeria in response to escalating violence against Christians. This decision follows a congressional hearing where lawmakers criticized the Nigerian government’s failure to protect Christian communities from increasing attacks.
During the hearing, it was highlighted that Nigerians account for 90% of Christians killed worldwide annually. A report by the Observatory for Religious Freedom in Africa documented that between October 2019 and September 2023, approximately 55,910 people were killed, and 21,000 others abducted by terrorist groups in Nigeria.
Representative Chris Smith, Chairman of the Subcommittee, criticized the previous administration for removing Nigeria from the Country of Particular Concern (CPC) list, a designation indicating severe violations of religious freedom. He urged President Trump to redesignate Nigeria as a CPC and consider further actions to address the ongoing violence.
