Abuja Court Sends Four Men to Remand for Police Attack

A Magistrates’ Court in Kubwa, Abuja, has ordered the remand of four men—Gabriel Ezekiel, Jude Danlami, Daniel Effiong, and Jacob Yohana—for allegedly assaulting two police officers during the execution of their duties.

Incident Details

According to the prosecution, the defendants conspired to break into the residence of Joshua Matthew on March 6, stealing a smart TV and ₦100,000 in cash. When police officers attempted to arrest the suspects, they were attacked with cutlasses, sticks, and stones, resulting in serious injuries. The injured officers are currently receiving treatment at the National Hospital.

Legal Proceedings

The defendants face charges of criminal conspiracy, causing grievous hurt, theft, and obstructing police officers in the performance of their lawful duties. They have pleaded not guilty to all charges. Defense counsel have applied for bail, citing the presumption of innocence under Section 36(5) of the 1999 Constitution. The prosecution opposes bail, arguing that investigations are ongoing and that remanding the defendants would aid in apprehending accomplices still at large.

Next Steps

Magistrate Oyepeju Mustapha has adjourned the case to March 20 for a ruling on the bail applications.
