Tragic Drowning of UNIMAID Student in Borno River

​On March 14, 2025, a tragic incident occurred involving two students from the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) in Borno State. The students, identified as Abafras Abdiel from the Department of Forestry and Silas Sule from the Department of Geology, went swimming at the Gwange River bank behind ECWA Church around 7:00 p.m. During their swim, both encountered difficulties and began to drown. ​

A combined rescue team, including police officers, divers, and fire service personnel, was promptly mobilized to the scene. They managed to retrieve both students from the river and rushed them to the State Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri. Unfortunately, Silas Sule was pronounced dead upon arrival, while Abafras Abdiel was admitted for treatment.
